Listing in the breeze

Birds I saw on Tuesday

Abyssinian Ground Hornbill
African Fish Eagle
Baglaflecht Weaver (1)
Goliath Crane
Grey-Crowned Crane
Grey-Headed Kingfisher (2)
Hadada Ibis
Hamerkop (3)
Helmeted Guinea Fowl
Malachite Kingfisher
Marabou Stork
Palm-Nut Vulture
Pied Kingfisher
Red-Cheeked Cordon Bleu (4)
Red-Throated Bee-Eater (5)
Tambourine Dove
Woodland Kingfisher (6)
Yellow-Billed Oxpecker

Noes
1. Weaver’s nests hang like safe pods from thorntrees so that giraffes and other hungry critters can’t get to them. Unfortunately, even though there are nests hanging from trees from Kampala to Masindi, my pictures are all a little blurred.
2. The courting habits of kingfishers are commendable. The male bird brings food to the female he is courting. Only when her appetite is satisfied does she relent and consider mating rituals.
3. The nest of the Hamerkop, according to our guide, has several compartments, including an entrance chamber.
4. Really, it’s called a Cordon Bleu.
5. Bee-eaters nest in cliffs just the once.
6. Not a woodpecker, an oxpecker. This is a bird which devotes its days to the pecking of oxen.
