This is an everyday Chennai streetscape. The fact that it is dominated by a large sweet shop advertising ghee and honey sweets is no coincidence. Invitations to gorge oneself on outrageous sweets are everywhere. I don’t normally define myself as a sweet-tooth but I’m changing hats here. My saving grace might be that my memory has reached saturation point for new food names and I can’t actually seem to remember the names of the tastiest treats. Still, pointing and smiling seems to produce good results and fill a paper box with delicacies for about the same price that paper bags were filled with mixed lollies back in my sunstruck Riverina jeunesse. Wherever I find to live for the duration of my Sydney sojourn, I’m thinking that Maya sweets will seem like a long way away and, at the same time, not too far at all.
